How To Choose Beds For Tall People

Over 6 foot? Maybe you're part of a tall couple? Here's how to find the best beds for tall people.

If you're on the taller side and looking for a new sleep set-up, it's important you consider the best beds for tall people. Getting the right bed for your height is paramount to a good night's sleep, helping you stay in a healthy sleeping position all night rather than cramped up and bent double. While you can't guarantee everywhere you'll stay will have a bed that fits you, you can make sure your own bed is the best for a tall person.

Why do tall people need extra-long beds?

Currently, a standard double bed is just 6'3" long - or 1.9m. Given that we don't usually lay in bed with our heads right against the headboard, this means that anyone over, say, 5'9 may find a standard double too short. It's recommended that you buy a extra-long bed that is 6" or 15cm longer than the tallest person sleeping in it. If you're 6'4" - not an uncommon height today - you'll need a tall bed that's 6'10" long.

Would I be better getting a custom-made bed?

Whilst you can get long bed custom-made for you - and if you're extremely tall, that's a good idea - you may find that a super king-size bed will work for you. At MattressNextDay, several of our ranges are available in super king size, which is usually 6' wide by 6'6" long. With a good mattress, tall people should be able to get a good night's sleep in a super king bed - particularly as many people tend to sleep in a curled-up (fetal) position. A super king bed gives you both the length and the width you need to be supported and comfortable at night, so it's the ideal bed size for tall people.

Things to consider when buying an extra-long bed

  • Your bed should be 10-15cm longer than you are to give you enough space to sleep comfortably, so measure up before you buy - our Ultimate UK Bed & Mattress Size Guide can help
  • Make sure you have enough floor space in your bedroom for a longer bed
  • Longer beds can also be wider too, so account for that extra room being taken up
  • Are you able to use the additional floor space taken up by a longer bed with additional under-bed storage?
  • It makes sense to get your bed, mattress, and bedding from the same manufacturer to ensure the sizing is going to match up.
