Help & Buying Guides

What size is a small double mattress?

Based on their name, it should come as no surprise that small double mattresses are slightly smaller than a typical double mattress. Measuring 4ft by 6ft3, queen-sized mattresses such as these are slightly narrower than their standard counterparts, but not by very much.

Indeed, in many cases, this reduction in width is actually a blessing in disguise, with 4ft double mattresses making the ideal bed choice for smaller apartments, guest beds, and sleep-loving teenagers moving into a bigger room.

What are the different types of small double mattresses?

As with all the different types of mattress sizes, small double mattresses are available in plenty of pocket-sprung, memory foam, and latex varieties, as well as many other mattress material alternatives.

Naturally, this gives you plenty of flexibility when it comes to finding the right small double mattress for your home, enabling you to more easily stay within whatever budget you’ve set yourself.

Why choose a small double mattress?

We’ve already hinted at one of the main reasons why you might want to choose a small double mattress for your bedroom, but there are more benefits to queen-sized beds than their small stature alone:

  • Extra floor space – thanks to their narrower nature, 4ft double mattresses give you that little bit of extra floor space to work with, which could be the difference between your bedside table fitting snuggly beside you or being left out of your room altogether.

  • Layout flexibility – being a touch smaller than larger mattress types, small double mattresses give you additional flexibility in how you want your room to be laid out, as you won’t have to worry about fitting other furniture around an enormous bed frame.

  • Cheaper price tag – last but not least, smaller double mattresses are almost always cheaper than their larger cousins, helping you save on price while still having ample sleeping space to enjoy.

Can a small double mattress fit two adults?

Even though a queen-sized bed is slightly smaller, they’re more than capable of comfortably fitting two adults side by side for a good night’s sleep – if anything, you and your partner will find it that much easier to cuddle up to one another on those lazy weekend mornings.

Can you put a small double mattress on a double bed?

While it is possible to put a small double mattress on a double bed frame, we would not recommend doing so. This is because there will be a noticeable gap between your mattress and your bed frame interior, meaning your mattress is far more likely to slide in the night and wake you up.

How much does a 4ft mattress cost?

If you’re after cheap 4ft small double mattresses, then you’ll be pleased to know that our range has brands and models priced as low as £150, while higher-quality options might cost you more than £500, depending on the sort of mattress you’re after.

In most cases, how much you spend on your new small double mattress is up to you, though the more you spend, the better the quality mattress you’ll get. Of course, if you want to save a little money, then you can always buy a small double divan and mattress set to ensure you have a bed frame that fits.
